The Beagle Project

We aim to rebuild the ship that carried Charles Darwin around the world, starting in Darwin's bicentenary year of 2009. The new Beagle will sail the world in Darwin's wake, and will inspire global audiences through unique public engagement and learning programmes, and original scientific research in evolutionary biology, biodiversity and climate change.

Darwin and the Adventure

September 20-23, 2009, Paraty, Brazil

In September, The HMS Beagle Trust joined scientists from South America, UK and USA to identify key opportunities for using sailing vessels for modern research with a focus on marine biology, the Barcode of Life and Earth monitoring. As part of the British Council-supported workshop, participants embarked on two short scientific voyages aboard the Brazilian tall ship Tocorimé into coastal waters to coincide with passes of the International Space Station, and local schoolchildren experienced a real-time Q&A session with astronauts aboard the station.
