An 11-year-old girl died after being shot and killed by a 15-year-old in a Fitchburg apartment on Tuesday evening, Fitchburg police said.

The girl died at a local hospital after being shot in a two-story duplex in the 5100 block of Curry Court around 9:35 p.m., Lt. Edward Hartwick said in a statement. A 15-year-old, who neighbors say was living with the 11-year-old, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of first degree homicide and taken to Dane County Jail for reservation, Hartwick said .

No other assailant is suspected by the police.

The site of the fatal incident is a small dead end road lined with ranch houses and two-story rentals, vacant lots and a landscaping company just west of Highway 18.

Although residents tried to defuse the tense situations on their own, the duplex where the 11-year-old lived had experienced crime problems over the years, neighbors said.

“I just wanna cry,” said Scott Lesch, a 40-year-old Curry Court resident who lives across the street from the duplex.

Lesch said the family of the 11-year-old shared the small downstairs unit with another family, totaling seven people in the apartment. Lesch and other neighbors said the 15-year-old policeman lived in detention with the killed 11-year-old.

Kari Holmes, who lives two doors down from the duplex, reportedly sees the 11-year-old walking through the yards to school alongside a little boy next door.
