Many of us have decided to welcome cute new dogs into our homes over the past couple of years – Kennel Club figures show dog ownership has soared nearly eight per cent and demand for four-legged friends after the lockdown remains high.
There are 221 different purebred dog breeds to choose from, as well as plenty of crossbreeds, so there’s a lot of thought to go into before selecting the latest addition to your family.
One thing to consider is whether a barking or howling dog could lead to complaints from neighbors, especially if you live in an apartment or flat.

Another dog bred to bark is the Beagle – whose ability to communicate an interesting scent has proven invaluable during a fox hunt. Beagles have two distinct types of barks – one to alert you to everyday incidents and a long, loud howl reserved for more special occasions.

While it’s true that some Corgis don’t bark, it’s a fairly common trait for both breeds – the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. Their vocal nature comes from their herding history to raise cattle and sheep.
