Muscat: In an effort to achieve self-sufficiency in agricultural products in the Sultanate of Oman and to meet growing consumer needs for plant products, especially leafy products, the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Wealth and Water Resources has signed an agreement with the Korean Information Technology Company (Bomet) for the production of leafy vegetables.

The agreement will contribute to capacity building, rehabilitation and training of technicians and farmers in the use of smart farming technologies.

Through the use of innovative agricultural techniques in the production of leafy vegetables, the project aims to attract investment and help job seekers and entrepreneurs in the country.

Funded by the Omani Indian Fertilizer Company (OMIFCO), smart farming technologies for the production of leafy vegetables use hydroponic systems.

The project, which will be implemented in the agricultural research farm of the General Directorate of Agricultural and Animal Research in Al-Rumais, consists of two basic stages.

The second stage involves the application and dissemination of the technology to farmers and investors and its evaluation under the supervision of specialists and researchers from the ministry.

The agreement aims to conduct applied research and scientific studies on the technology to assess its production efficiency and economic feasibility and to simplify it to suit the environmental conditions of the Sultanate of Oman.

The agreement was signed on behalf of the ministry by Engineer Khalfan bin Matar Al-Sharji, Director General of Animal Resources, Acting Undersecretary of Agriculture and Sangon Yang, Director General of the Company, Bureau of Middle- Orient, on behalf of the company.

It can be noted that smart farming technology for the production of leafy vegetables has many advantages including increased production per unit area and requiring less water in agriculture which may not exceed 70% of what is normally required and not affected by external climatic conditions. conditions.

This will therefore guarantee production throughout the year, in addition to being pesticide-free.
